Example: Starting a new extended search

Modified on Mon, 13 Oct at 4:17 PM

In our example, we want to search for “Polish government”. Enter the keyword “Polish” in the first search box

Click on “Search now” to display the hits list

In the next steps, you have various options for refining the results by adding or excluding additional keywords using the functions “+AND”, “+NOT” or “+OR”.

Combining words (AND)

Are there any articles in your hits list not relevant to you? With the “+AND” function, you can ensure only articles containing both your keyword and an additional word are found.

In our example, this means that some of the articles in your hits list may contain the word “Polish”, but they are not about the Polish government. To find only articles that also contain the word “government”, click on “+AND”. Then enter “government” in the new search box. Your hits list will now only contain articles which include both the terms “Polish” and “government”.

Excluding words (NOT)

(If you are already satisfied with your hits, you can skip this step.)

Your hits list may contain other articles that you would like to exclude. In our example, “Polish”, the search results also contain articles about polish. To exclude these in future, click on “+NOT”. Enter “nail” as the word to be excluded. Now, articles containing the word “nail” will no longer be displayed.

Adding words (OR)

Use the “+OR” function to add another word that should also be found in your search combination. Click on “+OR” below “Polish” and enter the word “politics”. This will also be limited to articles in combination with “government”, also excluding the word “nail”.

Adding word groups

Here is where you can add further words to your search to which the above-mentioned restrictions, with “+AND” or “+NOT”, should not be applied. Click on “+Word group” and enter “Sejm” as an example. Your search results will now also show entries in which “Sejm” appears.
